Professionalism is something that must be maintained by every individual within the work setting, especially in health care, whether it is the janitor, activity director, nursing assistant, doctor, or even the head administrator. Professionalism encompasses many aspects, such as teamwork, attitude, environment, knowledge, morals, and ethics.
Professionalism is the first thing that is being notice when you are in a workplace. Professionalism is defined as a set of characteristics and skills. Being in a medical health field, or in any business that requires interactions, professionalism is expected when working with clients.
According to Merriam- Webster Dictionary, the definition of professionalism is “the skill, good judgment, and polite behavior that is expected from a person who is trained to do a job well.” Some people’s idea of professionalism matches closely with this definition.
The trust that develops between the two clearly plays an important role in all the learning environments that were discussed, and there was a recurring theme around the fact that professionalism is a lot more than a set of standards, a code of practice, or membership of a professional body.
Professional dress, well-groomed hair and a clean-cut image without excessive piercings and visible tattoos are among expectations of professionalism in many white collar jobs. I believe that the concept of professionalism in the workplace is similar to the professionalism that you bring to the classroom. Students, like employees, are committed to learning and advancing the knowledge of their desired major. Students are efficient and manage their time wisely when it comes to different assignments and projects.
Professionalism, therefore, means the act of behaving in a manner that is expected by a given profession.
For some, being professional might mean dressing smartly at work, or doing a good job. For others, being professional means having advanced degrees or other certifications, framed and hung on the office wall. Professionalism encompasses all of these definitions. But, it also covers much more. So, what is professionalism, and why does it matter?
Being professional then is the act of behaving in a manner defined and expected by the chosen profession. This framework for professionalism in nursing began with our early roots with Florence Nightingale who set the bar rather high in regards to giving of herself to others and her expectation of excellence in practice.
Honesty is revered in many cultures and religions. A professional ethics also need to be integrity in their work. Integrity is a concept of consistency of actions, values, methods, principles, expectations, and outcomes. In ethics, integrity is regarded as the honesty and truthfulness or accuracy of one's actions.
According to the Dictionary of Occupational Titles, professionalism is defined as a proficiency of a clear and specific body of knowledge and contribution to that body of knowledge with an adherence to a distinct code of ethics which controls behavior via rigorous healthcare training (Dictionary of Occupational Titles, 1991).
Professionalism has to do with the way a person conducts himself or herself in the workplace. An individual who shows consideration and respect for others demonstrates a commitment to professionalism.
